RYY, a VISTA program

Welcome to Rochester Youth Year! This year, Rochester Youth Year has grown to 9 fellows (Kaitlin, Kyvaughn, Katie, Laura, Matt, Jill, Gabe, Ashley and Ferdous), all who will be using this blog to share out about their experiences during their year of service.

My role this year has been quite different  than last year. Although last year, I was a RYY Fellow placed at Embracing Options,  a pregnancy resource center, since August I have been serving as the VISTA leader.  Basically, it’s my job to ensure that their year of service in AmeriCorps VISTA runs smoothly, and that the goals of the community and the fellows are being met.

AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965 and incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993, VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 40 years.

VISTA members commit to serve full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, strengthen community groups, and much more. With passion, commitment, and hard work, you’ll create or expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty.

My role has shifted from” mentor” to “recruiter” recently.  All the VISTAs and and I have visited the 7 area colleges to recruit for the 2010-2011 program.  Some of the visits have been success and others… not so successful.  During the non-productive times I enjoyed getting to know my current VISTAs even better.  I am excited to see how the program will grow next year and look forward to seeing who the 2010-2011 VISTA leader will be.

…until I blog again
